A NEW HOME FOR HULL SCREEN?

An outside party has expressed interest in running Hull Screen, responding to the tender published by Hull City Council. All we know is that detailed negotiations are being conducted between the Council and this party regarding the operation of the cinema, subsidies, terms and conditions and lastly, but not least, the future of the current staff (who have been in limbo for a while, their morale being rock-bottom).

The respondent to the tender has expressed a wish to “make it happen”, and not to make a profit. If these discussions are fruitful, we expect the handover to happen sometime after the New Year in a new location, in time for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of its foundation. Discussions of other possibilities cannot be made publicly as these might put off respondents to the tender.

To those who have been wondering about City Screen getting involved in running the cinema, we happen to know that they are not interested. If any member has any suggestion or comment to make, please email them to us or post them in the Comments/Message board of our website, which is now on-line.

A bid for dedicated publicity funding (£25.000) has been submitted to the relevant department of the Council, after the Cabinet increased the marketing budget for the cinema, although the actual amount was not specified. At present the Screen has none of its own, but comes under the remit of the New Theatre. Further delay is expected before the outcome of the bid is known. Meanwhile, membership fees are being used to plug-in the black hole in the cinema finances.

We consider that it is imperative for the survival of Hull Screen to increase its audiences, therefore we think that all of us should do our most to promote the cinema by any means at our disposal (viral marketing, word of mouth, etc). With this in mind, the Steering Committee has been working (and financing) several options to raise its profile, including the design and production of a stylish poster. These posters are in process of being displayed in as many sites as we can cover, the intention being to update the programmes thereon monthly. We would like to thank Kall Kwik Hull Centre for their support in the production of this poster. Programmes are also being disseminated through several email listings.

Membership Fees:

FHS membership fees are being used primarily for publicity as there is now NO money for this in the Screen's funding.  Thus, payment of fees is crucial.

Due to the pressure on our finances resulting from our promotional activities, we regret that we are no longer able to post or email the newsletters to those members who still have not paid their annual subscription for 2008. Please, please, please, make sure that your contributions reach us in time so that we can continue to enjoy the benefits of an art-house cinema in the city.

Those who pay at any time during this year will be paid up until lst January 2009 also. If you have not paid your membership, please send cheque, made out to Friends of Hull Screen, to:

We need to keep the funds at a healthy level for postage/copying and helping to publicise the Screen, which matter we have been discussing this afternoon.

New members continue to join FHS, and we hope that many of you will become active in what is going to be a challenging period ahead (see below.)

Bits

We are soon going to carry out a “Lucky Dip”, so be expecting a couple of free tickets for any screening of your choice for the lucky winners selected at random!

A stylish poster for display in various locations has been designed.  If any members could place this in local windows, cafés and other suitable outlets, and regularly service them, please let us know. The colourful poster was designed so that the programme can be slotted when the schedule changes.

More news

Committee members have been given access to a most interesting report, dated 2004, of a meeting between Council officers and interested individuals from the University of Hull. It is full of visionary yet achievable suggestions for the future of the Screen and stresses in no uncertain manner the necessity of keeping it. This report also warmly praises Mark Ogden and the staff for their efforts “in attempting to encourage and foster film in the region”.

Two interesting films have been recently shown, “A Crude Awakening” (interrupted by two false fire alarms: Were oil interests trying to sabotage the event?), a thought provoking film regarding the impact of dwindling oil supplies; and “Mayday Tugs of War”, the story of tug men in WW2, which actually generated some publicity in the Hull Daily Mail.

Both our Susan Harr and the Council's Peter Appleton have recently been interviewed by the Hull Daily Mail.

Hull Cinema Group

Hull Cinema Group has arranged a social meet on Wednesday 20th August to see Batman: The Dark Knight at Vue Cinema (Princes Quay) at 8.15pm.

Cate will meet you in the Admiral of the Humber, Carr Lane from 6.45pm onwards. She will try and put a sign on the table so you will have some way of recognising them! Please get in touch with Cate Allison if you are interested in coming along. The meets are open to anyone of any age. See full post at the Comments Board.

At present the group meets once a month, usually the third Wednesday evening, to have a drink then see a movie (variety of genres) at one of the mainstream cinemas. Please contact Cate if you would like information about these meets also.
