Notes extracted from the Public Libraries Committee

Meeting of 16 September 1968 (p. 16)

Library Theatre - Regional Film Theatre. The Chief Librarian submitted a report on the Regional Film Theatre (See attachment A) which had already been circulated to the members of the Committee.

4148 Resolved - (a) That the Chief Librarian’s report be received and approved in principle; (b) that authority be and is hereby given for the purchase of the necessary equipment required (which will be covered by a grant) and the matter be referred to the Finance Committee; (c) that the Chief Librarian continue negotiations with the British Film Institute on the establishment of the proposed Regional Film Theatre; and (d) that the Town Clerk be and is hereby authorized to complete the necessary agreement.

Meeting of 11 November 1968 (p. 28)

Library Theatre - Regional Film Theatre. The Chief Librarian referred to resolution 4148 and reported on (a) the opening of the Regional Film Theatre early in 1969, and (b) the initial selection of films.

4197 Resolved - That (a) arrangements for the official opening to be left in the hands of the Chairman (Alderman Buckle) and Councillor Buen with power to act; (b) a provisional Advisory Committee for initial programming to be formed, consisting of three Members of the Public Libraries Committee and the Chief Librarian, and two Members from each of the following associations, viz, the British Film Institute, the Hull and District Film Society, and one Member from the Hull University Film Society and one Member from the Arts Centre Group, and (c) that the three Members of this Committee on the provisional Advisory Committee to be the Chairman and Councillors Buen and Rosen.

Meeting of 9 December 1968 (p. 33)

Hull Film Theatre - Agreement. The Chief Librarian referred to resolution 4148(d) and reported that the agreement between the Hull Corporation and the British Film Institute (See attachment B) had now been signed by both parties.

4214 Resolved - That the report be noted.

Meeting of 21 September 1970 (p. 15)

Hull Film Theatre - (…) He also reported that the final instalment of £342, being the balance of the total grant of £6112 from the British Film Institute towards the cost of the Hull Film Theatre had been received. (…)

Meeting of 8 March 1971 (p. 51)

Hull Film Theatre - The Chief Librarian reported the receipt of a letter from the British Film Institute regarding the obsolescence of 16 mm projection equipment and the offer of a grant of 50% towards the cost of a replacement projector. The Chief Librarian having submitted his observations, it was Resolved - (a) That the offer be noted, and (b) that the Chief Librarian be authorized to apply for such a grant, subject to the approval of the Finance Committee of the expenditure of £600.

Yorkshire Post, 30 March 1991 (p. 20)

Councillor Ramshaw called for a cut in the subsidy to film theatres in Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe. Coun. Considine, chair of Leisure Services Com., defended the theatres, which showed films not available in mainstrean cinemas and pulled in almost capacity audiences. The Council received between £10,000 and £12,000 from the BFI towards the cost of subsidies.
